Q. 1. What factors led to civil war in Sri Lanka?
Ans. i) Measures taken in majoritarianism gradually increased the feeling of alienation among Sri Lankan Tamils.
ii) They felt that the Constitution and government policies denied them equal political rights , discrimination against them in getting jobs and other opportunities and ignored their interests.
iii) As a result, the relations between Sinhalas and Tamil communities got strained over time.
iv) The Sri Lankan Tamils launched parties and struggles for the recognition of Tamil as an official language, regional autonomy and equality of opportunities in getting education and jobs.
v) By 1980s , several political organisations were formed demanding an independent Tamil Elam ( State) in northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka.
Vi) The distrust between the two communities turned into widespread conflict. It soon turned into a civil war as a result thousands of people of both the communities were killed.

a) Prudential Reason : These lay emphasis on better outcomes of Power sharing.

II) It's absence results into domination of majority community, which undermines the Unity of the Nation.
b) Moral Reason : These stress on power sharing as a valuable act because

II) A democratic rule involves it with those affected by its exercise and who have to live with its effect.
III) A legitimate Government is the one where citizens acquire a role in the system through participation.

The Belgian leaders realised this problem and took some significant measures to solve this as follows

In Sri Lanka, major social group are the Sinhala speakers ( 74% ) and the Tamil speakers ( 18%). In Sri Lanka Sri Lanka, the democratically elected government adopted a series of Majoritarian measures to establish Sinhala supremacy.
The government took the following measures;
i) Preferential policy that favoured Sinhala application for university position and government jobs.
ii) The state shall protect and foster Buddhism.
All these measures increased the feeling of alienation among Sri Lanka Tamils. The Belgian solution helped in avoiding civic strife whereas the Majoritarianism in Sri Lanka led to the Civil war.
