Legendary poet Padma Shri Jayanta Mahapatra passed away on 27/08/2023 at the age of 95 years. His poetry rooted in the Ethos of Odisha, served as a bridge between Indian culture and English verse. He is the first Indian poet to win Sahitya Akademi award for English Poetry. He won Sahitya Akademi award in the year 1981 for his poetry book Relationships. He has written more than 25 books out of which seven are in odia language and rest are in English language. 'Indian Summer' and 'Hunger' - are two great poem written by Jayanta Mahapatra which are the finest example of classic in modern Indian literature. He was awarded with Padma Shri in the year 2009.
